MTN Nigeria Rebrands Fibre Broadband Service to FibreX

MTN Nigeria has officially rebranded its fibre broadband service, previously known as MTN Fibre Broadband, to a new identity—FibreX. This move represents a strategic shift in the company’s vision to align more closely with the country’s digital transformation goals and enhance user experience through a stronger, more modern brand.

The announcement was made on Friday by Mr. Egerton Idehen, Chief Broadband Officer at MTN Nigeria. He described the rebranding as a significant milestone in MTN’s commitment to advancing broadband connectivity across Nigeria. According to him, FibreX will not only deliver fast and reliable internet but also symbolize the brand’s renewed dedication to making digital access more inclusive and impactful.

“The launch of FibreX reiterates our dedication to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation journey,” Idehen stated. He emphasized that the new brand identity is not just a name change but a broader effort to make the service more relatable, engaging, and accessible to a wider range of Nigerians.

The rebranding is closely aligned with the goals of the National Broadband Plan (NBP) 2020–2025, which aims to achieve 70% broadband penetration nationwide by 2025. The plan targets minimum broadband speeds of 25 Mbps in urban areas and 10 Mbps in rural regions. FibreX, according to Idehen, is poised to play a key role in helping the country meet these targets through robust infrastructure expansion and better service delivery.

“By enhancing our infrastructure and services, we aim to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive growth,” Idehen said.

MTN Nigeria is also actively supporting the Federal Government’s broader efforts to expand the nation’s fibre optic network. Currently, Nigeria has around 35,000 kilometers of laid fibre-optic cable. Through initiatives like FibreX, MTN plans to contribute to increasing that figure to 125,000 kilometers, which includes laying an additional 90,000 kilometers of fibre across the country.

Despite the name change, the underlying infrastructure remains the same. The FibreX service still relies on MTN’s FTTH (Fibre to the Home) network, which provides high-speed internet directly to homes and businesses. The decision to adopt a new name was driven by the need for a brand that resonates more personally with consumers and better reflects MTN’s modern, customer-centric approach.

“While the service continues to rely on our powerful FTTH infrastructure, the new brand name represents a more modern, relatable, and emotionally engaging identity,” Idehen noted.

He explained that FibreX was selected to better connect with users emotionally and to make the service more exciting and approachable. The brand aims to educate and inspire consumers in areas already covered by the fibre network—referred to as “home-passed locations.”

Idehen clarified that “home-passed locations” are areas where homes or buildings fall within the service range of the FTTH network, making them eligible for connection. This forms part of MTN’s broader strategy to drive digital inclusion and ensure more Nigerians have access to high-speed, reliable internet.

As Nigeria pushes forward in its journey toward digital inclusion, MTN believes that innovative services like FibreX will be critical in achieving widespread connectivity and fostering socioeconomic development.
