Belgian footballer Radja Nainggolan, 36, has been arrested as part of an investigation into a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation. He was among several suspects detained by Belgian police on Monday morning following a series of coordinated raids across the country.
According to the Brussels prosecutor’s office, the investigation involves the alleged importation of cocaine from South America to Europe through the port of Antwerp, with subsequent distribution in Belgium. Authorities are working to dismantle what appears to be a significant drug network operating in the region.
The raids uncovered substantial evidence, including over 370,000 euros ($389,000) in cash, several luxury watches valued at up to 360,000 euros each, jewelry, and 100 gold coins worth more than 116,000 euros. Investigators also seized two bulletproof vests and three firearms, raising further concerns about the scale and reach of the criminal organization.
Nainggolan’s arrest comes just days after his return to professional football. Last week, the former Belgium international came out of retirement to sign with Lokeren, a club in the Belgian second division. He made an immediate impact by scoring in his debut during a 1-1 draw against K. Lierse.
Born in Antwerp, Nainggolan enjoyed a successful football career, spending much of it in Italy with clubs like Roma and Inter Milan. Between 2009 and 2018, he earned 30 caps for the Belgium national team, known for his tenacity and skill as a midfielder.
